For some time now we have been thinking about and working on a Local History page for InfoSoup. We hope this will be a good way to highlight and promote new digital collections, local history websites and indexes from InfoSoup libraries, local history materials in InfoSoup, and our two genealogy database subscriptions. Again, as with the Readers' Page and Family Page, we wanted to focus on our libraries' locally developed resources, what's available in InfoSoup, along with a very limited list of well-established web resources.
We have two pages for you to look at. Local History @ Your Library focuses on material in InfoSoup libraries and online indexes to library materials. Digital Collections focuses on full-text and image resources from InfoSoup libraries and other statewide digital projects.
On the local history page I (Evan) did my best to identify libraries that had appropriate local history web sites and libraries that had census records on Microfilm. Please let me know if I missed someone. We will also be working with technical services to make sure that appropriate online resources linked to from these pages are then cataloged in InfoSoup.
Please take a look at the new pages and add your comments & questions here by Friday, June 15th. Thanks!
Evan & Beth

Beth--This is awesome! Having worked on a a couple of digital projects, I know the work involved. This makes access to them very easy and looks great, the libraries should really appreciate the links. As more libraries digitize collections are we going to be able to incorporate them to these pages? We have a collection in Shawano we did as a test library for WHO, http://content.wisconsinhistory.org/cdm4/index_sccl.php?CISOROOT=/sccl

Penny - Glad you like the new pages! :) Yes, the intent is to add more as InfoSoup libraries digitize more collections.

Beth, Loved the Library of Congress link. This will be great as we add more local documents. I like the fact that it is centralized and not having to search various websites. Joan

Penny - Thanks for bringing the Shawano collection to my attention. I have added a link to it under the Local Digital Collections.

I think this is a great idea --- and it looks very nice too. The pages are great for patrons to have the various local, state, and federal resources listed together, and, of course, it's nice for the libraries as well to have one more place listing their sites.

This goes a LONG way toward addressing the concerns I spoke of at the OWLSnet planning group. I like it alot, and I think the patrons will also.

Every time I look at these new pages I come to the same conclusion - Very Cool! I'm really pleased that we're linking to so many local resources, and I like the look of the pages.
