August 2008 Archives
The Payment for Lost and Billed Materials Procedures document has been updated to reflect the decision made at the January 18, 2008 AAC meeting. In that meeting, a vote passed to establish that OWLSnet libraries will no longer bill other libraries for items checked out at those libraries, but not returned.
No other changes were made to this document, but if you have comments or suggestions about it, please let me know.

The fines paid database is working again - however it seems to be missing most of the data for last Saturday. We have a call in to Innovative to see if this problem can be fixed.
At the OWLS and NFLS meetings last week, we discussed the possibility of 8-1/2 x 11 patron registration forms. The question is; "how much filing space will we need?"
According to the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the U.S. Department of Energy, 2,000 sheets of paper should take up 1 foot of file space. A typical 4-drawer file cabinet then might store 16,000 sheets, or 12,000 sheets at 75% full.
The current number of patrons by home agency is available at http://www.owlsnet.info/stats/2008/Cards-Held/Patrons_Home_2ndQ.pdf.
I hope this helps in your calculations!

It's once again time to update the license on all dedicated catalog computers at the OWLSnet Libraries. Please note that we are now calling this type of computer a "Restricted Catalog Workstation" or RCW. The RCW licenses are scheduled to expire August 27th, 2008. Failure to update the license on your computers before that date will cause the RCW to stop working.
As there are still some RCWs out there running on old Windows 98 computers, OWLS has created 2 separate instructional documents detailing the steps required to upgrade the RCW licenses, one for Windows 98 computers and one for Windows XP computers. Please be sure to follow the instructions in the document that is right for your RCW.
The instructions are in PDF format and can be printed by going to the following secure URLs. You will need to use the standard extranet login to access the instructions.
http://www.owlsnet.info/secure/rcw/rcwup98.pdf (For Windows 98 RCW computers)
http://www.owlsnet.info/secure/rcw/rcwupXP.pdf (For Windows XP RCW computers)
Thank you in advance for your assistance in completing the update(s) before the expiration date.

If you regularly un-check the print slip checkbox, you may notice that the behavior has changed. Previously, when you unchecked the box, it would remain unchecked until you left the Circulation Desk mode. When you returned to Circulation Desk, the print slip checkbox would have reverted back to checked.
Now, the print slip checkbox seems to remain unchecked until you check it again - regardless of whether or not you leave the Circulation Desk mode. If this is a feature that you use frequently, you'll want to pay special attention to this until you get used to the new behavior.
Thanks to Cheryl at Sturgeon Bay for figuring out what was happening!
