Server upgrade Monday evening July 27th

|
On Monday evening, July 27th, we plan to upgrade the Millennium server to Release 2009A.  This upgrade will be done after all of the libraries have closed.  While it does not require any new software to be installed on computers, the first login on Tuesday morning will take quite a bit longer, as new jar files must be downloaded from the server.

If you have any problems logging in, or experience any problems with Millennium after the upgrade, please contact the OWLS office.
Some patrons are reporting that InfoSoup is no longer prompting them to remember their barcode and PIN.  We're still working on this, but here's what we believe so far.

  • It started when we installed SSL on the InfoSoup server, in preparation for Ecommerce.
  • It's only happening in Internet Explorer 8 - previous versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox are unaffected.
  • Lots of people are experiencing this problem with IE 8, on lots of different websites.
  • It's only happening with the XP Operating system - Vista OS computers do not seem to be affected.
We haven't found a fix for this yet - the only fixes that we've seen recommend editing the registry, and other invasive procedures.

For patrons who are experiencing this, our recommendation right now is to consider using another browser.

Minor update to Millennium March 10th

|
Innovative has recently released a minor update to R2007.  Typically these incremental updates include fixes for bugs and very minor enhancements.  Because there are a number of small fixes that we are looking for, we've asked Innovative to install this on our system.  No downtime will be involved in this update.

Innovative will be installing this on the evening of Tuesday, March 10th.  On Wednesday, March 11, your local PC will need to download new files from the server, so it may take longer to log in.  Typically, this increases login time by a few minutes, depending on the time of day you will be logging in.

If have any questions, please let me know.  If you have problems logging in on Wednesday, March 11th, please contact the OWLS office.

Please update catalog PC licenses

|
It's once again time to update the license on all dedicated catalog computers at the OWLSnet Libraries.  Please note that we are now calling this type of computer a "Restricted Catalog Workstation" or RCW.  The RCW licenses are scheduled to expire August 27th, 2008.  Failure to update the license on your computers before that date will cause the RCW to stop working.

As there are still some RCWs out there running on old Windows 98 computers, OWLS has created 2 separate instructional documents detailing the steps required to upgrade the RCW licenses, one for Windows 98 computers and one for Windows XP computers.  Please be sure to follow the instructions in the document that is right for your RCW.

The instructions are in PDF format and can be printed by going to the following secure URLs.  You will need to use the standard extranet login to access the instructions.

http://www.owlsnet.info/secure/rcw/rcwup98.pdf   (For Windows 98 RCW computers)
http://www.owlsnet.info/secure/rcw/rcwupXP.pdf  (For Windows XP RCW computers)

Thank you in advance for your assistance in completing the update(s) before the expiration date.

Dave Bacon - OWLS
