What do I need to know about the OWLS server before I create my web site?

Be sure to name your home page default.htm. This is important! Why? We use an NT server, and it looks for "default" as the home page in any directory and is also looking for a .htm file extension. If you do not use "default.htm," the server won't know where your page is located.

How do I get my web site on the OWLS server?

  1. Contact Beth at OWLS to let her know you would like your site to be hosted on the OWLS server.
  2. Tell Beth what domain name you would like to use. (See Domain Name Registration for more information.)
  3. When your domain name and directory have been prepared, Beth will contact you and will step you through uploading your web site to the OWLS web server.

Can I update my site on my own?

Yes. After your site is set up on the OWLS server by Beth, you will be trained how to update your pages.

What will my web site address be?

That depends on what option you choose! See Domain Name Registration for more information.

I don't know how to create a web site. What should I do?

Beth provides web design classes in the OWLS lab that any OWLSnet staff person is able to attend. If your library is an OWLS member, you have more options -- Beth can design a site for you and train you how to maintain it or she will provide one-on-one training at your own pace. NFLS libraries should contact Terrie Howe for assistance.

Will I be able to know how many hits my pages are getting?

Yes. OWLS will provide a monthly site usage report to each library whose site is hosted on the OWLS server. We use WebTrends to generate the reports, and they will be posted online each month. If you have questions about your monthly reports, contact Evan at OWLS.

How much disk space are we allowed to use on the OWLS server?

At this time, there are no limits. OWLS reserves the right to limit disk space should the need arise.

Are there any limitations to what I can load on the OWLS server?

Yes. In order to protect our server, we do need to impose some restrictions. Please read the Web Services Policy [pdf] for more details.
